£300m car scrappage scheme has no effect on UK car sales

The Government’s £300m car scrappage scheme launched last month and has proven to have no real effect after sales figures were released that showed a 24% drop in new car sales.

The Government’s car scrappage scheme provides the consumer with £2000 when they scrap their old car for a new model car. The scheme launched in May and hit a road bump quite quickly after there were arguments over costs which resulted in Ford holding off on their involvement in the scheme.

Even with the introduction of the new car scrappage scheme, the UK has now suffered a streak of 12 months where the car market has suffered losses. There has been news that consumer confidence is recovering slightly, however, with these new sales figures, it simply weakens that idea.

A total of 35,000 new cars have been ordered through the scrappage scheme, according to The Society of Motor Manufacturers and Traders, however, they say that it would take some time for this number to affect the sales figures. They also used the excuse, to give the scheme some extra time to prove itself, that a number of customers are weighing up offers to try and get the best deal before buying a new car.

Overall, 134,858 new cars were sold in May with the popular Ford Fiesta selling the most. Vauxhall have suffered this May after they were hit by a 40% drop in sales, they only contributed 15,386 to the overall sales.

The amount of corporate sales has had a major affect on the number of new car sales in May. Car leasing companies that offer a range of makes, such as Vauxhall leasing and BMW leasing, are reducing the amount of cars they are buying because they are also suffering from the economic crash.

Leasing companies are struggling because when many people consider getting a new car, they forget about leasing options which tend to be cheaper than buying a new car. Plus with the introduction of the car scrappage scheme, consumers are encouraged to buy a new car rather than consider other options.

 

Car sales tumble by almost a quarter since last May

UK sales of new cars were down by a quarter in May compared to the same time last year, despite the government’s introduction of a £300m scrappage scheme to encourage buyers back into the new car market. Sales have tumbled by 24.8%, the 13th month in a row that sales have fallen.

The total number of vehicles sold from January – May 2009 was 289,958, a dramatic drop of 27.9% from the same period last year. The motoring industry has been hit hardest of all by the recession, and many manufacturers have been forced to resort to desperate measures to stay in business. The constant decline in sales has caused many manufacturers such as Nissan, Vauxhall, Honda and Ford to implement temporary factory closures and many employees have found themselves out of work as jobs have been cut.

The new scrappage scheme introduced by the government should help begin to solve the problem, providing consumers with a £2000 incentive to trade in their old cars registered before August 1999 as scrap and purchase a new one instead. Granted, £2000 is not going to enable you to trade in an old banger and buy a new Mercedes Benz, but it’s a step in the right direction and more than 35,000 orders have been put in so far, though the result of this is yet to be seen in the sales figures. This does not mean the scrappage scheme has failed however, It has only been going since the 18th May and the positive effect on car sales cannot be expected to be visible already. The idea is that the project will help to improve people’s faith in the car industryand lead to rise in sales from June.

Despite the obvious setbacks for the motoring industry there is one niche market that is still proving a huge success. The ‘mini’ segment grew by 50% in May, suggesting that consumers would rather buy a Nissan Micra, a Mini or a Ford Fiesta than a fuel-guzzling sports car or a people carrier. Smaller city cars are a far better choice for people with a tight budget as they are not only cheaper to buy but much more fuel efficient too.
