Most people wait until they notice pulling, pulsing, grinding, or squealing from their braking system before they take their vehicles into the shop. Below, I'll explain how each of these problems happens so you'll have a clearer understanding with regard to your car's brakes.

Pulling To The Side

In some cases, pressing on the pedal to slow your car might result in your vehicle pulling to one side. The only way to compensate for the pull is to turn the steering wheel slightly to the other side. Several factors can cause this. It can prevent the brake's operation if oil leaks onto the pads or shoes on one side. The pulling can also be caused by the pads or shoes not being adjusted properly.

Squealing And Grinding

This is a common “wear and tear” problem; pads and shoes will eventually wear down. When they do, they’ll contribute to friction, which causes squealing. Normally, the problem can be resolved relatively inexpensively by replacing the worn parts. If the problem is allowed to persist, the rotor may become damaged, which leads to a grinding noise. At that point, the cost of repairs will increase because the rotor will usually need to be smoothed.

Pulsing Pedal

When you feel pulsing in the brake pedal, it can be causes by the anti-lock system being engaged. However, more often than not, the pulsing is caused by a warped rotor. A rotor can become warped over time due to heat, friction, and even moisture. The warp causes an uneven surface, which leads to the pulse you’ll feel in the pedal. This can normally be resolved by smoothing the rotor.

Lackluster Performance

You might find that, over time, your brakes become far less effective toward slowing your vehicle than they once were. This can be due to a few different reasons. First, the pads and shoes can crystallize as the result of excess heat due to friction. Second, an oil seal may develop a leak allowing oil to soak the pads and shoes. Third, if the engine develops a vaccuum problem, your brake performance can suffer.

Because your vehicle’s brakes are critical to your safety, not to mention the safety of your passengers and other motorists, learn to identify early signs of trouble. If you notice any of them, have a trained mechanic inspect your car and resolve the underlying issue.

This is from a perspective from my experience running a San Diego auto repair company.  The two areas I want to address is your safety and your car’s long term health. 

So in regards to safety you can classify all maintenance as being important to safety.  But one part of your car is really important to your safety.That part of the car is your brakes.With cars being able to travel much faster than before, good brakes are essential for safety. In relation to your car, your car’s overall health will be dependant on how well maintained you keep your car.Some of the crucial things you have to do is to make sure you always change the oil and get tune ups. By making an effort to always change the oil you allow your car to run smoother and longer.By not always changing your oil you run the chance of ruining your engine.

Another important point you should remember to do is have regular tune ups done.If you can do that you will be able to keep your car’s important functions taken care of.By performing this step you will have a car that runs smoother and cleaner.If you fail to do this you will have a car that doesn’t run very well.  Some of the consequences could lead to failed smog tests.  Most of the cars that fail in my San Diego smog check shop are the ones that didn’t take care of those things.

So in doing these few things what you accomplish is the safety of you and your loved ones and the safety of your car.

But families will still be needing a form of transportation.But when families are on a tight budget they have to go with a cheaper choice.  That alternative is used cars. 

As a San Diego auto repair shop owner I am asked to inspect some of these used cars.Because when you are making a purchase of a used car, the last thing you want is a lemon.So by taking the time to perform a good inspection, you may avoid costly repairs.

So when you are examining the used cars, take in mind these 2 things to look for.  First you want to check the brakes.  We do San Diego brakes in our shop.So I know from experience that having to repair brakes can be very costly.  If you purchase a car that the brakes weren’t maintained it could become expensive.Last thing you want to happen is the need to get the entire braking system replaced.  So make sure the brakes are good.

Second, you want to ensure that the car is running clean.  In other words can it pass a smog test.  In my business I do smog test in San Diego.The last thing you are going to want is the purchase of a used car that needs some expensive repairs.  Especially if those repairs involve emission problems.

If you buy a car that is unable to pass a smog check, that won’t be good.  It is a sign that the car wasn’t taken care of.What most likely occured is they didn’t do any maintenance on it.These could be the start of a lot more problems in the future.

If you make sure to inspect these few items you can save yourself some money. By not inspecting you can lead yourself into some big repairs.When you need to save money, I am pretty sure you don’t want that.

So I would like to offer some perspective from a San Diego auto repair shop owner.  Now you might think I am biased but hear me out.After your reading of this you are going to see that it is sensible and money will be saved.

One of the tips on saving money is by making sure we are able to keep our cars for longer periods of time. In the height of this boom economy when everybody was benefiting people would just trade their cars all over the place. They would just trade their cars as soon as it was too old.So the fact of the matter is a lot of people never thought of maintaining their car.

Well in the economy we are in that is not a luxury anymore.Most everyone will not be able to afford going out and buying a new car in these days.People are forced to hang on to their old ones.  What that means is they will have to maintain their cars.

One of the major items of maintenance is being certain you are able to pass a smog check.Once you have an older car it will be a required law.If you can’t pass the smog test that may cause very expensive repairs.  I know this first hand running my San Diego smog check shop. 

There are some things you are able to do to help make certain you pass the test.You can make an effort to keep your car tuned and maintained.  You can make sure to change the oil and oil filter.  You can make sure the muffler is in good working order. 

This is where you can lose money.  If you fail the smog test you could be in for a lot of money in repairs.So by ensuring that you follow these maintenance tips you will be able to save money.  By taking the time to maintain it now you won’t have to spend big on repairs later.

Don’t forget that you have to maintain your brakes as well.  With my experience with our San Diego brakes shop this is important as well. By ensuring that the brakes pads you have aren’t wworn down you can make your disc brakes last longer.  Not maintaining it can lead to expensive repairs.  Follow this and you will save money.

First, examine your vehicle carefully better yet take it to a car shop for inspection. Allowing a mechanic to check your car’s break, air cooling system, and so on may require you to shell out money, but that is a vital step in ensuring safety.

Another word of advice is this: you have to ensure that the tires that make up your truck or your car are acceptable. An acceptable pressure on a vehicle’s wheels is more often than not about thirty until thirty two psi also, you should make it a point that you’ll bring spares as having a flat wheel is not something that you can predict.

After that, a good advice is for you to become skilled at substituting your car’s punctured wheel with that of your spare tire. It is not a good idea to be in the actual emergency just for you to start learning what you should do to successfully change a flat tire, instead, be ahead of your game. An important suggestion is to put into practice while in your parking spot the instructions seen in your automobile’s manual about the tire changing process. There is also a need to do prior research on where the next gas stations and mechanic shops are before going on a drive just so you know where to run to when car troubles occur. That is a huge mistake.  There are still parts of your car that need to be maintained and paid attention to.  Most people take care of oil changes and things like that.  Although that is important for the life of your car, what most people neglect is their brakes.  Which is important to the life of themselves and their family.

So let’s take a look at your brakes and knowing when it is time to change them because they have become unsafe.

The first symptom is when there is grinding or scratching you need to replace your brakes.  Usually this is a sign of the metal plates being gone that are supposed to hold the brake pads and now it rubs against the rotor.  This is a bad sign and you have to go and replace your brakes immediately.

Second thing you can look for is high pitch noises your brakes make or a loud screeching.  A condition called glazed is what causes this.  This happens if a person uses the brakes excessively which causes the rotors to get too hot.  The rotors then are burned.

A third problem is vibrations.  When your rotors or drums are warped, when you are braking this will cause a vibration.   This happens when too much heat cause them to lose their shape.  When it occurs, your rotor has to be replaced.

A final issue to examine is when your brakes are pullling.  When you are braking, what will happen is your vehicle is pulled in one direction.  This occurs when the brake calipers are not being applied evenly.  A fluid leak is what causes this.  To find out which side is leaking, you are going to need a mechanic to take a look at it.  You take care of this by having the caliper replaced and getting all the air out of the brakes.
