It’s no surprise to anyone that the car industry has been in a slump these past couple years. Automakers have tried everything from redesign to rebates to get people onto their lots. We have seen hybrids take over the roads, SUV’s disappear and well-loved brands cease to exist. There have been a lot of changes for sure and GM was another on the list when they announced that production of Saturn would end and they would phase out the Pontiac name.

While Saturn has been a well-known brand for GM, in the 20 years it has been around it has never been profitable for the company. This stems from an original brand image problem when Saturn was first introduced. Saturn became synonymous with cheap and poorly made cars. Whether or not that was true, the reputation stuck. While GM improved the models over the years, consumers never really jumped on the Saturn bandwagon.

When Saturn was first introduced back in the early 1990’s, it was supposed to be “a different kind of car company”. The idea was to attract young buyers with efficient, affordable, trendy cars that could compete with the ever-growing Japanese brands. Unfortunately, developers were slow to promote the new brand and found it difficult to find and attract these buyers they were hoping for. In the end, it looks as though it was just never meant to be for Saturn.

Former race car driver Roger Penske had been in negotiations with GM to buy the Saturn brand and reintroduce it to the world. They had planned on allowing GM to manufacture Saturn through 2011 and then let Penske and the Saturn brand run on its own two feet. After deals with Penske fell through, GM was left with no choice but to shut down the brand. The Saturn brand will most likely be completely halted by the end of 2010.

Another blow to the GM brand is the phasing out of the Pontiac name. When GM was initially forced to rework their infrastructure because of government intervention, they wanted to phase out the Pontiac name. GM was hoping to keep certain well-marketed models under the Pontiac brand name but sell them at Chevrolet dealerships. After reviewing the entire plan, it became obvious that there was no hope for Pontiac. The brand has not been profitable for years so GM was left with no choice but to stop production. GM, like Saturn, believes production will end by December of 2010.

While these were hard decisions for GM to make, it did provide them with a bit of hope. By shutting down two unprofitable brands within the company, they are able to devote the rest of their resources to developing and promoting their other brands – Chevrolet, Cadillac, Buick and “>GMC. It’s always difficult to see a huge brand name go under but it is much better than the alternative. What we really can’t afford to see is an entire American icon fold under economic hardships. American industry needs industrial staples like GM to push through and serve as a beacon of hop in these challenging economic times. So, while we say goodbye to Saturn and Pontiac, let’s hope this is a push in the right direction for GM to get back on its own two feet and help pull America out of this economic slump.

The 4-stroke combustion process (intake, compression, power, and exhaust) normally occurs smoothly. The pistons, spark plugs, fuel injectors, and other components work like a well-oiled machine. Pressure builds within the combustion chamber until the air-fuel mixture contained within it is ignited by the spark plug. That’s what propels your vehicle forward. When you hear a knocking sound as you accelerate, especially during heavy load, that means there is something wrong with your engine. This occurrence is called spark knock. And it can lead to expensive damage.

In this article, I’ll explain what is happening inside your engine to produce the knocking or pinging sound. I’ll also provide a few hints regarding what might be the root cause of the problem.

This is Spark Knock?

The knocking sound is due to the fuel within your vehicle’s combustion chamber detonating. Rather than burning cleanly, it explodes under load, over and over. This occurs due to erratic build up of heat and pressure inside the chamber. It is not being controlled properly, and the excess heat and pressure is igniting the gas.

You might not immediately notice a change in the performance or output of your car engine. However, over a period of time, the spark knock can cause problems such as cracked rod bearings, broken rings, and head gasket problems. Each of these problems can be expensive to repair.

Reasons Knocking Can Happen

So, why does detonation happen? It can occur when your car’s exhaust gas recirculation (EGR) system malfunctions. The EGR valve is tasked with opening when you’re pushing your engine under heavy load (for example, if you’re towing something up a hill). By opening, it allows excess exhaust to flow out of the combustion chamber, lowering the temperature. If the EGR fails, this process cannot happen.

Detonation can also happen if your car’s knock sensor malfunctions. This sensor is supposed to identify situations in which the fuel is igniting erratically. It then tells your car’s computer to change the ignition timing in order to compensate. A failed sensor prevents this from occurring.

With many later model cars, detonation can be the result of carbon buildup. This happens when the carbon accumulates inside the combustion chamber on the pistons. Fortunately, this problem is simple to resolve; most mechanics will flush the injectors and the combustion chamber with a special detergent that clears away the carbon deposits.

Lower octane value gas can be a main cause of detonation. Some gas station owners label their pumps with “87″ when the octane is actually lower. Try filling your tank with a premium grade fuel from a respected brand (for example, Chevron).

If you hear knocking when your engine is under heavy load, take your vehicle to an experienced mechanic as soon as possible. He’ll have the necessary equipment to test your engine and identify the root cause of the fuel detonation. If you ignore the problem, you could be setting yourself up for expensive repairs in the future.
