We’ve talked about engines and the combustion process they go through in order to power your vehicle. In essence, fuel goes into the combustion chamber, the spark plug triggers a small explosion contained within the chamber, and the resulting exhaust exits. The entry of the fuel and the departure of the exhaust are controlled, in large part, by camshafts. Here we will go over what they are and how they do their jobs.

Describing Camshafts

A camshaft is a rod on which cams sit. The cams (sometimes called lobes) are oblong in shape with one end noticeably protruding outward from the rod. As the rod turns, so too, do the cams. What allows them to perform their job is the protruding end of each lobe.

Understanding Their Jobs

First, to better understand the role of the camshaft, let’s review the 4-step process that happens within your car’s combustion chamber. A piston sits near the top of the chamber when the intake stroke begins. The piston descends, the intake valve opens, and the chamber fills with the air-fuel mixture. Next, the compression stroke begins and the piston rises, compressing the air-fuel mixture within the chamber.

The power stroke begins as the piston reaches the top of the chamber. A spark plug sits at the top. The spark plug ignites the compressed air-fuel mixture, creating an explosion. The force of the explosion pushes the piston toward the bottom of the chamber. As it descends, the exhaust stroke begins as the exhaust valve opens. The piston rises and forces the exhaust from the combustion chamber.

The above description of the 4-stroke process your engine goes through is necessary to fully appreciate the job of the camshafts. I mentioned that the intake valve opens during the intake stroke. As it does, a fuel injector pushes gasoline into the chamber. The intake valve opens as the result of one of the cams on the camshaft. As the rod turns, the oblong cam’s protruding end pushes against the tip of the intake valve. As it does, it forces the valve downward and thereby, creates an opening to the combustion chamber for the fuel.

You’ll remember that the exhaust valve opens in order that the rising piston can force out the exhaust that exists after the power stroke. This happens in the same manner as with the intake camshaft. An exhaust camshaft turns and one of the oblong cams on the rod pushes down on the tip of the exhaust valve. This causes an opening in the chamber through which the gases are pushed out.

This process happens hundreds of times per minute as you drive. The entire system is designed around flawless timing. While engines attract most of the attention from consumers, they wouldn’t work properly without the camshafts.

Yet, under the hood, this complex assortment of gears, clutches, bands, seals, and gaskets, works tirelessly to maintain the performance of your engine. With enough miles, the tranny will eventually need to be repaired, replaced, or completely overhauled. The good news is that there are things you can do to make sure that your transmission system works for a long time.

Below, I’ll describe a few maintenance areas that deserve your attention. I’ll explain how to look for fluid leaks, check for color or odors that suggest a problem, and note changes in how your tranny operates.

Looking For Leaks

If you notice spots appearing underneath your vehicle in the general area of your transmission, place a piece of white cardboard underneath to catch the drip. That will allow you to ID the color. If the drip appears reddish, it is likely coming from your tranny or the steering column. Take your car to a mechanic and ask him to identify the source of the leak.

If the amount of leaking is relatively small, you may be able to put off having it fixed for awhile. Just be sure to keep the fluid levels up. Like motor oil for your engine, your tranny needs plenty of fluid. Starving it will lead to costly damage. Also, keep in mind that leaks seldom repair themselves. Checking For Health with Your Nose and Eyes

Get into the habit of checking your fluid levels every two or three weeks. Turn your engine on and let it idle for a minute. Then, pop the hood and pull the dipstick out. If the fluid is "healthy," it will have a vibrant, reddish hue. If it is brown, appears murky, or smells as if it's burning, take your vehicle to a mechanic and ask him to check your transmission. He will probably suggest that you drain it before replenishing its fluid.

Transmissions normally perform their job with uniformity. Changes in behavior will not be subtle. For example, you might hear a high-pitched whine coming from the floor. You might notice a hard shift between certain gears. You might also notice that your transmission shifts sporadically at different RPMs. Each of these is a warning sign that something might be wrong.
